Onboarding Customers

Your customers’ first encounter with your business is crucial. It’s important that you make that experience count. While you may believe you’ve won the customer as soon as they’ve visited your website, that’s just not the case. In fact, 40-60% of digital users will open an app once and never log on again. In order to win these consumers over, you need to have a plan. Here are a few successful onboarding tips to help you get some inspiration:

What Are Your Expectations?

It’s easier to achieve your goal if you know what it will take to accomplish it. Show your customers what they need to do to get started with your business. By doing so, they’ll be more motivated to finish the process. For example, Etsy does a fantastic job with this by showing consumers what to expect for each step:

Break It Down

The worst mistake you can make is giving your customers too much information at a time. Don’t overwhelm them. Instead, break things down, making the process as simple and easy as possible. Dropbox does a great job of this, giving users one task to do at a time:

This smaller and simpler approach is much more manageable and consumers are likely to finish the process when it’s easier to accomplish.

Point Out What’s Important

Instead of telling your customers to click on certain buttons, show them exactly where to go. Slack is an excellent example:

There are several tools available online, such as Appcues and Nickelled, that can add instructions for consumers directly onto your website.

Onboarding is more than just a few steps—it’s a journey. Companies who optimize and improve this process see a better turnover than companies who don’t. Give yourself the best chance at securing more customers by refining your onboarding process!
